W: Good morning, listeners. This is your host Rachel at the Morning Radio Show. What do you eat for breakfast? Today I will introduce a healthy breakfast food list. Eggs are an excellent choice because they are high in protein. Highprotein foods such as eggs provide energy for the brain. Cheese is another good option. It reduces hunger so it supports weight loss. Yogurt is also great to eat in the morning. It contains probiotics that can improve digestion. Eating berries such as blueberries or strawberries is another perfect way to start the morning. They are lower in sugar than most other fruits, but higher in fiber. Add them to yogurt for a tasty breakfast. Start every day with a healthy meal. Thank you.

[16 ~ 17] W: Good morning, class! Today, we’ll continue to learn some interesting facts about animals. Did you know that some animals can live without food for months and even years? First, crocodiles, one of the oldest reptiles of the planet, can go for a few months without food, and in extreme cases, they can go up to 3 years without food. They save energy by moving slowly and at times by being motionless too. Next, spiders have to wait for their food to come to them, so sometimes the wait could be long. But, no worries. Their body is able to last for 3 to 4 months without food. This can stretch up to 1 year. As for penguins, their metabolism is reduced during cold weather, which can help them sustain themselves without food or water for 2 to 4 months. Lastly, sharks can live without food for 8 to 10 weeks. Interestingly, the longer they live without food, the more deadly their hunting skills become. Now, let’s watch some videos of these animals. reptile 파충류 go without ~없이 지내다 extreme , 극단의 극도의 motionless 움직이지 않는 stretch 늘어나다 metabolism 신진대

M: Hello. I’m Dave Jackson from the Cultural Art Museum. I’m so excited to announce an upcoming special art exhibition. The Paper Sculpture Show is an annual paper art exhibition that began in 2015. It’ll be held at our museum for a week next month. This year, 20 international papercraft artists will take part in the event. But don’t be surprised if you cannot find their complete paper artworks at the exhibition. The artists just contribute a design for a three-dimensional paper piece. It is up to the museum visitors to assemble the artwork. Admission is free for local residents, so don’t miss this opportunity to join in the process of creating an excellent piece of paper art.

M: Good afternoon, students of Robinson High School. This is Mr. Anderson,
coach of the school dance club. I’d like to announce that we’ll be recruiting
additional new members for our school dance club. Previously we were
looking for 10 new club members, and many students showed interest in
joining. Luckily, we’ve been assigned to a bigger room than expected. Now
we’re allowed to accept five additional new members to make a total of 15
students. Once again, I’m happy to inform you that our school dance club
has increased the number of new members to recruit. Thank you for your
interest.

2. 대화를 듣고, 여자의 의견으로 가장 적절한 것을 고르시오.
W: Hey, Connor. What are you doing with all of these gift boxes?
M: Mom, I’m wrapping a scarf for Grandma. You know, her birthday is in a week.
W: Great. But do you really need these three boxes for just one scarf?
M: Yes. The boxes are all different sizes, and I’ll put each one inside the other.
W: Well, don’t you feel bad about wasting all of those boxes?
M: What do you mean? I just wanted the gift to look fancy and interesting.
W: I understand. However, the boxes will end up being thrown away, right?
M: So, you mean it’s overpackaging? Oh, I didn’t know I was wasting boxes.
W: Yeah. I think we should avoid overpackaging to reduce unnecessary waste.
M: You’re right. I’ll use one box for now and save the others for later.
W: Good idea. No matter how it looks, Grandma will love your gift.

3. 대화를 듣고, 두 사람의 관계를 가장 잘 나타낸 것을 고르시오.

W: Oh, thank you for interviewing me, Mr. Wilson. I’m a big fan of your
magazine.
M: Thanks. People love your movie Short Days. I was wondering who picked
out the title.
W: Well, it was basically my idea and the movie director agreed.
M: It really catches the theme of the movie. Why do you think people love your
stories?
W: When writing film scripts, I always try to make the characters as realistic as
possible.
M: Maybe that’s why people feel stronger connections to them. What inspires
you when you write your scripts?
W: Often, my own life experiences help create many of the scenes in my scripts.
M: I see. Thank you. The readers of our magazine will appreciate you sharing
your time with us.

M: Oh! I have economics class in 10 minutes, and it finishes at 6 o’clock.

M: Yes. It costs $15 per bag for little puppies and $20 per bag for adult dogs.
W: My dogs are all grown up. So, I’ll get two bags of dog food for adult dogs.
M: All right. Do you need anything else?
W: Well, can you recommend a good brush?
M: Oh, how about this one? It’s very popular among our customers and only
costs $10.
W: Perfect. I’ll take one.
M: Good. So you want two bags of dog food for adult dogs and one brush, right?
W: Yes. Can I use this discount coupon?
M: Let me see. [Pause] Yes, you can get 10% off the total with this coupon.
W: Great. I’ll pay in cash.

7. 대화를 듣고, 남자가 컴퓨터 프로그래밍 강좌를 신청하지 않은 이유를 고르시오.
W: Hey, Blake. It’s the last day of the class. Did you sign up for the next
computer programming class?
M: No, Angela. I cannot take the class anymore.
W: Oh, I thought you enjoyed the programming class.
M: Yeah. I found it really helpful for my career, too.
W: Then, what’s the reason? Are you too tired to attend the class after work?
M: Not at all. The class is quite exciting.
W: Is it because the new class starts 30 minutes earlier?
M: No. That’s actually better for my schedule. The problem is that I have to
move to another city.
W: Oh, you’re moving?
M: Yes. So, I don’t think I can make it.
W: I’m sorry to hear that. It was nice taking the class with you.
M: Same here. Let’s keep in touch.

M: Gina, come check out this flyer.
W: What’s this, Ted? [Pause] Oh, Samuel’s Woodworking Class. Looks interesting.
M: It’s a one-time class in the art studio of the community center. I think you’d
like it, too.
W: Absolutely! Look, we can get some hands-on practice making a pencil case
or a wooden plate.
M: Yes! The class will be held from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. next Friday.
W: I’ll be available then. Do you want to take the class together?
M: Sure. I think I’m going to make a pencil case. What about you?
W: I’d like to make a wooden plate. How much is the registration fee?
M: It’s only $40 per person.
W: That’s a good price. Does it say how we can register?
M: Here. We can register on the community center website.
W: Yes, and look. Only 12 people can register. We’d better hurry.
M: Let’s sign up now.

9. 2021 Lakeside Essay Contest에 관한 다음 내용을 듣고, 일치하지 않는 것을 고르시오.
W: Okay, class. Before I let you go, I’d like to remind you about the 2021
Lakeside Essay Contest. As you know, the theme of this year is “messages
from summer.” Last year, the contest was only open to freshmen. But this
year, all students at Lakeside High School can participate. You can submit
your essay to me by email. Don’t forget your essay should be no longer than
three pages. Please start writing your essay today because the deadline is
next Wednesday. You can check the results of the contest on July 3rd. The
top 10 essays will be posted on our school website. I hope many of you
participate in this contest! All right, everyone. See you next time.

10. 다음 표를 보면서 대화를 듣고, 남자가 주문할 자전거를 고르시오.
M: Hey, Olivia. You know a lot about bicycles. Would you help me choose one
from this list?
W: Sure. Let me see. [Pause] Oh, you’re looking at bicycles for commuters.
Well, I don’t recommend the black one for your safety at night.
M: You’re right. It won’t be safe when it’s dark. Then I’ll go for the other colors.
W: Good idea. What’s your budget?
M: I can spend up to $300.
W: Okay. Now you need to choose a frame size.
M: Should I choose a medium-sized frame?
W: No. Because you’re tall, you’ll need a bigger one.
M: Okay. I’ll get one of these then. Do you think I need a foldable bicycle?
W: Hmm, it depends on how often you use public transportation.
M: I rarely use public transportation, so I guess I don’t need a foldable one.
W: Then, this model is the best choice for you.
M: Great. I’ll order it now. Thanks.

M: Yeah. I was thinking about getting a haircut today. What about the hairstylist
you talked about?
W: He’s good, but you should call him first and check if he’s available. Do you
want the phone number?

W: Yes, but I haven’t found one yet. Your band is still my first choice, but I
know you already have a drummer.
M: Actually, our drummer had to quit for personal reasons. We want you to play
drums in our band.

W: Yes, speaking.
M: I’m calling to tell you about the order you placed.
W: Oh, is there a problem?
M: Yes. Unfortunately, the black skirt you ordered is out of stock at the moment.
W: Oh, no. I need it for my graduation ceremony this weekend.
M: We’re very sorry for the inconvenience.
W: Okay. Then, what are my options?
M: You may cancel your order and get a full refund. Or we could send you the
same skirt, but in a different color.
W: Hmm... What colors do you have?
M: We currently have only gray in stock. If we send it out today, it’ll arrive by
Thursday.
W: Well, I like the design of the skirt, so gray’s fine.

W: Hi, honey. What’s up?
M: Where are you right now?
W: I just parked my car. I’ll be home in a minute. How about you?
M: I’m at the grocery store, but I’ve just realized one of my credit cards is missing.
W: Really? You should call the credit card company and cancel your card right away.
M: I will. But before I do that, can you check the pockets of my jacket, please?
W: Okay. Which jacket do you want me to check?
M: It’s the brown one. I wore it yesterday.
W: You mean the one I bought for you last spring?
M: That’s right. It’s in the living room. Meanwhile, I’ll look around the grocery
store just in case I dropped the card.

15. 다음 상황 설명을 듣고, Rachel이 Kevin에게 할 말로 가장 적절한 것을 고르시오.
[3점]
M: Kevin is looking for a place to work out every day. He has found two fitness
centers with good facilities. The first one is a 5-minute walk from home, and
the second one is a 30-minute walk. Kevin likes the first fitness center
because it’s closer to home. However, he also thinks that the second fitness
center can be a good choice because it offers a great discount for new
members. Kevin cannot decide which one to choose and asks his sister,
Rachel, for advice. Rachel remembers that he quit exercising in the past
because the fitness centers were far from home. She thinks that Kevin should
choose a fitness center based on distance, not cost. So, Rachel wants to
suggest to Kevin that he should choose the fitness center near home. In this
situation, what would Rachel most likely say to Kevin?

W: Hello, students. Last time, you learned about the people who invented drones.
As technology develops, drones are being used more frequently around the
world. So, today, we’ll talk about how they’re used in different jobs. First,
drones help farmers grow crops more efficiently. For example, drones are used to
spread seeds that may be difficult to plant. They also spray chemicals to protect
plants from harmful insects. Second, photographers use drones to easily access
areas that are hard to reach. Specifically, nature and wildlife photographers no
longer need to go through dangerous jungles and rainforests. Next, drones are
useful for police officers when they control traffic. Drones could provide
updates on traffic flow and accidents, and even help identify anyone driving
dangerously. Last, drones aid firefighters. Firefighters use drones that drop
tanks of special chemicals to prevent the spread of fire. Now, let’s watch an
incredible video of drones in action.

M: Um... No, I think she would prefer the plain ones more.

W:  Dad! Do you remember this picture?
M: Wow, it’s an old photo. When was it taken? Were you thirteen?
W:  I think so. I love the two birds flying in the sky.
M: Yeah, it was a really beautiful day. Oh, I remember the hat you’re wearing in the picture.
W: Yes, you bought it for my birthday. It was my  favorite hat that summer.
M: And there’s a book next to the bag. You always brought a book wherever you went.
W: Right. Look at our dog, Sparky! He’s running around the beach.
M:  He’s such a good dog.
W:  Oh, there’s a sandcastle under the tree.
M:  It’s lovely. Somebody must have enjoyed making it.
W: We had so much fun. We should go back there someday.
M:  That would be great.

W: Yeah, I’ve been working in the childcare field for a long time, and a coworker and I decided to open up our own.
M:  That’s great! Where will it be?
W:  We’re thinking of across from Central Library.

W: Honey, I just got a call from my cousin Harry. His wedding is going to be on October 10th in Korea.
M:  That’s good news! His fiancée is from Korea, right?
W: Yeah. They’ve decided to have a traditional wedding there. We should book our flight tickets soon.
M: Sounds great! It’ll be cool to see a wedding in Korea.

W:  Hi, Jeremy. How’s it going?
M: Oh, hi, Samantha. I didn’t expect to see you at work today. I thought you were working from home all of this week.
W:  That was my plan.
M:  Did something happen?
W: Actually, I was just having difficulty  concentrating at home, so I thought I could be more productive if I came here to the office.
M:  I see. Do you have a dedicated work space at    your house?
W:  What do you mean?
M: You know, a place that you only use for working. Not like where you watch TV or at your kitchen table.
W:  Kind of like a home office?
M: Yeah, basically. It could help put you in the mindset of work so you can focus better and be more productive.
W: I normally try to work on my living room couch. I’ll give what you said a try. Thanks for the advice.
M:  You’re welcome.

M: All right. It’s all set up. Do you want me to move it to the side a little bit?
W:  No. It’s exactly where I want it. I love it.
M: Okay.
W: You’re taking my old one, aren’t you? I had that arranged when I bought this one.
M:  Yeah. How long have you had the old one?
W: For more than 15 years. It sometimes makes a loud noise. That’s why I bought a new one.
M: I see. Well, the new refrigerator is plugged in, but wait one or two hours before putting anything in it.
W:  Why is that?
M: Because if you put food in it before it gets cold, it’ll smell bad. Do you have any other questions about the refrigerator?
W: No. Thanks for installing it and connecting the water line to the water dispenser and ice maker in it.
M: No problem. Here’s my business card. Contact me if you have any problems.
W:  Thank you.

W: Hey, David. Looking at pictures on your smartphone? M: Yeah. Here’s one of my niece Kate. Last weekend, she set up a hot cocoa stand to raise money to    help
people in need.
W: How thoughtful! Let me have a look. Oh, she  added a Christmas theme. She put a Santa Claus doll on the chair on the left.
M: Yeah, and she hung this rabbit stuffed animal from the top of the stand.
W: It’s very cute. It must’ve been a little chilly. Kate was wearing a hat and muffler.
M: Yes, it was in the morning. Thankfully, it warmed up during the day.
W:  Did she make the menu in front of the ladder?
M: Yes, she did. Oh, I just realized something. See this lantern under the Christmas tree?
W: Yeah.
M: It’s from my grandfather, Kate’s great-grandfather. It has to be at least 100 years old.
W:  Wow, that’s really old.

6 정답 ⑤
[Script & Translation]
M: What are you doing, Mom? Are you making a shopping list?
W: No. I’m making a list of things we don’t use anymore. I think it’s time to clean up the house. We have too much stuff.
M: Yeah. So are you going to throw away all the items on the list?
W:  No. I’ll take some of them to a charity.
M: You’re making a long list. It won’t be easy to  sort out all the stuff.
W:  I know. It’ll take a while to get it done.
M: When are you going to start? Is there anything I can do?
W: Your dad and I are planning to do it this  weekend. Do you have anything that you don’t use anymore in your room?
M: Actually, I organized my room during the winter vacation, but I’ll check again.
W: Okay.
M:  I’ll let you know when I’m finished.

7 정답 ②
[Script & Translation]
W:  Good morning, Dad.
M: Good morning, Jessica. How was your room last night?
W: The room was nice and the blanket and pillows were comfortable. But I couldn’t sleep well.
M: Why not? Is it because you weren’t sleeping in your own bed?
W: No, that wasn’t a problem. It’s because the people in the hotel room next to me were pretty noisy.
M:  Oh, really? So they kept you up at night?
W:  Yes. I think they were having a party.
M: You should’ve come and told us or called the front desk.
W: I didn’t want to wake you up, and I didn’t think of calling the front desk.
M: I see. Let’s go to the front desk now and tell them what happened last night.
W: Okay.

M: Honey, check this out. I found an online appliance store that’s having a going-out-of-business sale right now.
W:  Oh, let’s see. Do they have any coffee makers?
M: That’s what I was about to look for. [Clicking sound] Oh, look. They have the exact one we want. It’s originally $300, but it’s 30% off right now!
W:  Awesome! Let’s get it.
M:  I’ll add it to the shopping cart.
W: And let’s look at their microwaves. If they have one at a good price, let’s get it.
M: All right. [Clicking sound] Here they are. This one looks good.
W:  Yeah. It’s originally $100, but it’s at half price now.
M:  Okay. Let’s place our order now.
W: All right. Hey, look at that. We get an additional $10 off for spending over $200.
M:  That’s good. I’m going to pay with my credit card.
W: Okay.

9 정답 ⑤
[Script & Translation]
M:  Stella, what are you looking at on the Internet?
W: I’m looking at the public library website. They’re having a Spring Family Book Walk next month.
M: Oh, that’s an event where people walk around  and do activities related to books, isn’t it?
W: Yeah. It’s Saturday, May 23rd, at 10 a.m. We should take Mom and Dad. They’d have a lot of fun.
M:  Definitely. Where will it be?
W: At Riverside Park. There will be a book sale set up too in the park, so we can go there after the walk.
M:  Perfect. Do we need to register for it?
W: Let’s see. Yeah, we do. Registration begins on May 1st.
M:  We’ll just have to remember to do that.
W: Yeah. I’ll write a reminder on the calendar so I won’t forget.
M:  Good idea. Thanks for finding out about that.

10 정답 ④
[Script & Translation]
M:  Are you doing some online shopping, honey?
W:  Yeah, I’m looking for a storage cart for the kitchen.
M:  That’s a good idea. Do you see any you like?
W: I just came across these five models, but I don’t want to buy this one. I don’t think plastic would be strong enough.
M:  I agree. How much are you willing to spend on it?
W:  Well, I think we should keep it under $200.
M: Okay. That eliminates this one. And I think we should definitely get one with handles.
W: I think so too. It’d be easier to move around. Which do you like better out of these two?
M: Hmm.... Both would match our furniture, so then how about this one? The more shelves, the better.
W:  Sure. Why not? Let’s go for it.
M: Okay.

W: Hi, Logan. It’s been ages since you visited our restaurant last time.
M:  Yes. I’ve been very busy these days.
W: I see. How was the food today? It’s a dish we just added to the menu.
M: Your food is always delicious. I want to be a chef like you.
W: Thanks. Oh, how did your cooking test go? You said last time you would take the test.
M: I passed the written test, but I have a performance test to go.
W: That reminds me of my performance test. I failed it the first time.
M:  You failed? That’s unbelievable!
W: Well, I was so nervous that I couldn’t finish cooking in time.
M:  Too bad. Then what should I do to finish cooking  in time?
W: Well, you must practice cooking a lot, but you also need to learn about laying out the tools and utensils on the kitchen counter.
M: I see. I’ll keep in mind what you said about setting out the kitchen utensils.
W: Good. Then you can finish cooking in the given time.

W: Sandra has been working as a secretary for her boss, Winston, at a trading company for 10 years. She  is a very positive and kind person who always has a bright expression and kind words to say. Nowadays, however, she hasn’t been her normal positive self because she’s been worried about her father, who was injured in a car accident. Winston notices that Sandra hasn’t been smiling very much and hasn’t been as energetic as usual. He is concerned, so he goes over to Sandra to find out what’s worrying her. In this situation, what would Winston most likely say to Sandra?
Winston: I’m wondering why you look so  down.

M: Mandy, are you ready for our fishing trip this weekend?
W: Yes, honey. I’m so excited. It’s going to be my first ocean fishing experience. I’ve already confirmed about the trip on my blog.
M: We’re going to have a wonderful time. Let’s take a lot of pictures.
W: That’ll be great. Oh, I bought waterproof jackets for us.
M:  Thanks. We’ll need them to keep ourselves dry.
W:  Right. Is there anything else we need to prepare?
M: Hmm.... We might need to bring some food for the trip.
W: Okay, I’ll make some sandwiches. Do we also need to bring our own fishing rods?
M: No, we don’t. The fishing tour company will provide them for us.
W:  Great. Can you call to confirm our reservation?
M:  I already did that an hour ago.
W:  Thank you, sweetheart.

M: Ruth! How was my concert performance? I was so nervous.
W: Your singing and playing the guitar... everything was amazing! The entire audience loved it.
M: Thanks. But I actually got some of the lyrics wrong in the middle of the song.
W:  Don’t worry. I don’t think anybody noticed.

M: Good morning, students! Last class, we covered how to gather information. Today, we’re going to talk about how to convey information effectively. If you have a lot of information to communicate, what do you think is the best way to convey it? The  answer is by using data graphics. Here are lots of numbers, which are just listed. But now I’ll convert the listed data into a chart and a graphic. [Pause] Look. What do you think? The data is now much easier and clearer to understand. You can spot patterns and connections in the data. Making information visual can help convey data, especially large amounts. Now, let’s take a look at other ways data can be visualized.

W:  Hi, Mr. Manning. How are you doing?
M: Hi, Ms. Frazier. I’m doing well. You look really busy today.
W: Yeah, at this time of year university students are all printing papers. We have twice as much work as usual.
M: I’m glad business is doing well. I just stopped by to check on my restaurant flyers.
W:  Good. We  just finished the first draft this   morning. I was going to email it to you later today. I’ll pull it up on the computer.
M: Thanks.
W:  Here it is. What do you think?
M: It’s great! I really like the font and background. And the logo really sticks out, which I was hoping for. It’s exactly what I want. I’ll take 500 copies.
W: All right. I can get those done by the end of the week. Is that all right?
M: Sure. Oh, come to think of it, make that 600. I’m planning on heavily promoting the opening of my restaurant throughout the neighborhood.
W: Good idea. I’ll call you when they’re ready for pickup.
M:  Great, thanks.

W: Jason, I’ve made this infographic to include in my sociology report. What do you think?
M: I think it effectively displays your findings. So your report is about travel?
W: Yeah, specifically travel preferences. I surveyed 100 students about theirs.
M: That’s reflected in the title, “What Is Your Travel Style?” on the top.
W: Yeah. Do you think the picture of the backpack to the right of the title looks okay? I drew it myself.
M: It’s great. The pie chart below it really stands out, which is good.
W: Thanks. To the left of the pie chart, can you understand this image? There are the beach and buildings under the mountains.
M:  Does that mean people prefer traveling where    they can go hiking over just hanging out on a beach or in a big city?
W: Exactly!
M:  It displays your information well.
W: And the bar graph to the left side of that picture shows the types of transportation people prefer.
M: That looks good too. The lengths of the bars clearly explain the preferences.
W:  Now, I just have to print out my report.

W: Mr. Russell, here are the pictures that I took at the school sports day last week.
M: Wow! They’re great! Did you use a drone to take these?
W: Yes.
M: Amazing! The students and parents will really love these pictures!
W:  I hope so.
M: I’ll upload a few of these pictures to the school website.
W: Okay. Did you get the signed consent forms back from students’ parents to allow the students to have their pictures on the website?
M: Yeah. I got them before the school sports day. In some of the pictures, the students’ full names on their uniforms are visible.
W: Oh, then we should black out their names in the pictures.
M:  All right. Could you do that?
W: Sure, no problem. And who will post the pictures on the bulletin board?
M:  The homeroom teachers will do that.
W: Perfect.

M:  Honey, what are you doing on the computer?
W:  I’m checking our driving route to Crema tomorrow.
M:  Can’t we just take Highway 2 East?
W: Yeah, that’s the fastest way. But tomorrow I’m thinking we should take Route A38 instead.
M: Oh, is that because Highway 2 East is still under construction?
W:  No. The construction ended last month.
M: Then why Route A38? It would take a lot longer.
The speed limit is so much lower.
W: I know, but Route A38 is supposedly really beautiful and scenic. Since we’re not in a rush, I thought it’d be nice to take it.
M:  Oh, really? I’m in then.
W: And even though there are some tolls we’ll have to pay, I think it’s worth it.
M:  I agree! I’m really looking forward to it!

W: Hello. Welcome to Safeway Travels. How may I help you?
M: Hello. I’d like to book a flight to Hong Kong for this Friday.
W: That’s really soon. Let me check if there are any available.
M:  Okay, thanks.
W: [Typing sound] Good news. There are tickets available. Let’s see... there’s one that leaves at 3 p.m. It’s $500.
M:  Are there any tickets that leave earlier?
W:  There’s one at 10 a.m., but it’s $650.
M: That’s pretty expensive, but I’ll take it. Is meal service included?
W:  No, it’s Bluemoon Air, a small airline. If you’d  like a meal, you can pre-order it. A chicken salad is $20 and a sandwich set is $25.
M:  I’ll order a sandwich set.
W:  All right. Do you need anything else?
M:  No, that’s it. And I’ll pay by credit card. Here it is.
W:  Okay. Wait a moment, please.

M:  Hello, Ms. Anderson.
W:  Hi, Shawn. How have you been since graduation?
M: Not so great. I had a few auditions, but never got a role.
W: I see. Actually, I’m calling because my friend is directing a television drama called A Christmas Dream. And they’re auditioning for the lead role.   I
thought you’d be interested.
M: Thanks for letting me know. I’m definitely interested. Could you tell me what kind of role it is?
W: It’s for a 19-year-old boy who’s a dreamer, and who moves to a new city with his family.
M:  Sounds interesting. When is the audition?
W: It’s next Saturday, but you have to sign up for it by this Friday.
M:  Do you know where I can do that?
W: Online. I’ll text you the website address. You’ll be able to find more detailed information on the website.
M: Thank you so much, Ms. Anderson. I’ll do my best to get the role.

M: Hey, Claudia. Yeah, actually I can’t stop thinking about the presentation I gave this morning.
W:  What presentation?
M: It was for my sociology class. It was about the influence of mass media on society.
W:  Did you make a mistake or something?
M: Well, the main part of the presentation went smoothly, but something happened during the Q&A session.
W:  Were you asked a question you couldn’t answer?
M: No. But some people pointed out that one of the survey results in my presentation wasn’t reliable.
W: Why?
M: They said the question I asked was biased, prompting the respondents to answer in a specific way. I hadn’t realized that, but they were right.
W: I see. Don’t worry too much. Just be more careful in the future to avoid making the same mistake.
M: Okay. I’ll be sure to create questions that are not partial.

M: Honey, I’m looking online for a picture frame for the painting we bought recently. Shall we choose one together?
W:  Sure. Let me see. How much should we spend?
M: I don’t want to spend more than $40. I think a picture frame over that price is too expensive.
W: I see. Then let’s go for a model under $40. Next, which material do you want?
M:  I don’t like plastic. What do you think?
W:  Me, neither. It’s not eco-friendly.
M:  Okay.  Let’s  choose from the non-plastic  models.
Now what about the color?
W: Well, not white. White wouldn’t match the painting well.
M:  You’re right. Plus, white gets dirty too easily.
W: Then we have two options left. Oh, they both come with a free gift. Which do you prefer, the picture key ring or the picture magnet?
M:  Well, why don’t we take the picture magnet?
W: Alright. It would be a great decoration for our refrigerator.
M:  Okay. Let’s order this model.

W: Honey, finally we’re at the airport. Do you know where the parking lot is?
M: Yes, I do. It’s a little far from here, so I’ll drop off you and the kids first in front of the entrance.
W:  Okay. Shall I wait for you at the check-in counter?
M:  Sounds good. I’ll go there after parking the car.

M: Emily, we finally made it to the hot spring. That was a long drive.
W: Yeah. But it’ll be worth driving all the way here. A lot of people told me this hot spring is really nice.
M: I also heard the water is really hot and clean, and there are beautiful mountain views.
W: Sounds awesome! I can’t wait to enjoy the hot spring.

M: Hello, everyone. Thank you for visiting our campground. Our campground is located near Green Valley, which is home to many different plants and animals. So please be careful not to harm our valuable, beautiful nature. First of all, do not throw away any food in the woods. Discarded food not only smells bad, but it can also cause problems for the wild animals if they eat it. Therefore, when you leave the campground, make sure to throw out food scraps and all other trash in the designated area near the entrance. Also, to prevent forest fires, make sure to completely put out your fire when you leave. Thank you for your cooperation and have a great camping experience.

[Script & Translation]
M: Hello, students. I’m happy to see you in my  lecture at Lawrence Hospital. I’m Dr. Anderson. When a person close to you is hospitalized, you want to visit them in the hospital to comfort them. But in this situation, it’s important to do  the  following. First of all, in case the person has major surgery, avoid visiting them on the date of the surgery. It’s because the patient needs to have a sufficient amount of time to recover from the surgery. Also, if you have an infectious disease, do not visit the patient. The patient’s illness can get worse by exposure to an infectious disease. Finally, refraining from bringing pets is also very important because they can carry harmful germs into the hospital. Keep these  things in mind to make your visits pleasant to your loved one.

5 정답 ④
[Script & Translation]
W:  John, whose wedding is that picture of?
M: The groom is one of my friends. It was taken just after his wedding ceremony.
W: Wow, it’s a beautiful picture! I like how you and your friends had the photo taken in the flower garden.
M:  The flowers in the garden were really beautiful.
W: Yes, they look beautiful. The girls on the right are putting their hands on their heads.
M:  They were trying to make a heart with their arms.
W: Why did the bride and groom hold an umbrella in the picture? Was the sun that hot?
M: No. The umbrella was just a prop. It’s trendy to use props in your wedding pictures these days.
W: Oh, I see. You and your friend on the left look pretty funny too. Both of you raised your hands in the air.
M:  We yelled out, “Hurray!” at that time.
W: That’s cool. The ship on the horizon adds a really nice touch to the picture.
M:  Yes. It was like the perfect place to take a picture.

6 정답 ①
[Script & Translation]
M:  Hi, Grandma. What are you doing?
W: Oh, hi, Ben. I’m pickling some onions. I’m going to fill all of those jars.
M:  Nice! And those are the onions you grew, right?
W: Yeah, in the communal garden down the street. Remember when you helped me plant seeds there in the spring?
M: Yes. Whenever I ride my bike past there, I look at the plants. They’re big now!
W: I know. And actually, the tomatoes are ready to be picked. I’m going to go pick some later for salads tonight.
M:  If you want, I can go pick them up for you.
W: That’s sweet of you. Do you remember where the tomatoes are?
M:  Sure. I’ve been there many times.
W: Good.
M:  Is there anything else I can help you with?
W:  No. I’ll get you a basket for the tomatoes now.
M: Okay.

7 정답 ③
[Script & Translation]
M: Julia, have you started preparing for our workplace sports day?
W:  Yes, I’m looking for a venue right now.
M:  Have you looked into the Lakeside Sports    Center?
That’s where we usually have it.
W: Yeah. I went there yesterday, and I found out that we won’t be able to hold the event there this year.
M:  Oh, yeah. Are they still remodeling?
W: They’re almost done, but because of the remodeling, it’s not going to work for us.
M:  Why not? Won’t it be nicer after the remodeling?
W: Yeah. It’ll be nice and new, but because they’ve built a new building, there’s much less outdoor space. It’ll be too small for us.
M: I see. That’s too bad. That was such a good place for our sports day.
W:  I know. So I’m looking for another good place.
M:  I’m sure you’ll find one soon.

8 정답 ①
[Script & Translation]
W:  Hello, David. Sorry, I’m a bit late.
M: Hi, Emily. No problem. You’re just 5 minutes late. So how would you like to have your hair done today?
W:  I’d  like to get my normal haircut and have it   dyed.
How much will it cost?
M:  It depends if you want full or partial coloring. Full is
$50 and partial is $30.
W:  I just want partial coloring this time.
M: Okay. And a haircut is $20, but it’s $10 if you get a coloring too.
W: Good. And I’d like to get a deep hair conditioning treatment. How much is that?
M:  It’s $50.
W:  That’s quite expensive, but I’ll get that too.
M:  Great. Anything else?
W: No. Oh, I have this 10% off coupon. Would I be able to use it?
M:  Sure. I’ll take that off the total for you.
W:  That sounds great.

9 정답 ②
[Script & Translation]
W: Honey, I love our new neighborhood. I’m so glad we moved here.
M: Me, too. And guess what. One of my coworkers told me about a good library nearby.
W:  Oh, cool!
M: It’s called Fountainbridge Library. We can walk there from our house. It’s just behind the fire station.
W: Perfect.
M: And my coworker told me the library has different events and classes, like book fairs, writing classes, and computer classes.
W:  We should go there this weekend.
M: That’s what I was thinking. But we have to go on Saturday because it’s closed on Sundays.
W:  All right. Do you know when it’s open on   Saturdays?
M:  10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
W:  Then let’s walk there after lunch.
M:  Sounds good.

10 정답 ②
[Script & Translation]
M:  What are you looking at, Grace?
W: It’s a flyer for the Brooks Autumn Fair next weekend.
M:  Let’s see. There are usually some fun events    there.
We should check one out.
W:  Okay, let’s do it. Oh, the food fair sounds  great. M: But it’s always so crowded. I’d rather not go there. W:  Good point. How about this one, then?
M:  I’m not free on Sunday. I’ll be at my grandma’s 80th birthday party.
W: I see. Then among these three events, which one would you prefer?
M:  This one sounds the most fun, but it ends so late.
W:  Yeah. I don’t want to be out until 11 p.m.
M:  Then how about this one?
W: Sounds good to me. Actually, Brooks Park is really close to my house so I can easily walk there.
M:  Great. Then let’s check this one out.

11 정답 ①
[Script & Translation]
W:  Honey, what are you doing on the computer?
M: I’m searching for a meal delivery service like we talked about before.
W:  Oh, good. I’m excited about trying one out.
M: Me, too. It could save us time and we’ll be able to try a variety of dishes.
W: For sure. We’re not the greatest cooks, so it’ll be nice to have some easy recipes to follow.
M: That’s true. Oh, check this one out. Tentila Box.... It looks good.
W:  Oh, yeah. It looks like they offer different cuisines.
M: Yeah. And it says they go to different local areas in the world to get authentic, regional recipes.
W:  Cool. And look, they only use organic ingredients.
M: This would be perfect for us. Do you think I should sign up for it?
W:  Yeah. I’m a little concerned about the price, though.
M: I see your point. But I think it’s worth it to have good food.

12 정답 ②
[Script & Translation]
W: Sally runs a flower shop downtown and her friend John owns a bakery several blocks away. These days Sally is worried about the decrease in the number of her customers. So she’s trying to find ways to attract customers. Today she comes up with the idea of selling tea at her flower shop. People who come for tea could buy flowers. Sally tells John about that and he says it’s a good idea. John suggests that she also sell cookies with the tea. Sally likes his tip a lot and wants to ask if she can buy them from him. In this situation, what would Sally most likely say to John?
Sally: Can I get the cookies from your  bakery?

M:  Hi, Jessica. What are you looking at?
W: Oh, hi, Michael. I’m looking at the posters for the student president election to find out more about it.
M:  Oh, yeah? When is the election going to be?
W:  It’s next Wednesday, July 17.
M: Okay. And I’m curious about what the candidates’ promises are this year.
W: Well, the first candidate promises to make the school festival the best. And the second candidate’s promise is to extend gym hours.
M:  Hmm.... To  make up my mind, I’ll have to hear their speeches.
W: Me, too. They’ll each give their speech in the main auditorium this Friday.
M: Okay. This year the method of voting is electronic, isn’t it?
W: Yeah. If you log in on the voting page with your student number and password, you can vote there.
M:  Great. I’m excited to see who will be elected!

W:  Ted,  I’m going to join the yoga club this   semester.
Do you want to join it, too?
M: I’m thinking of the soccer club. I prefer something more physical. Yoga’s just stretching.
W: It’s more than that. It improves flexibility and muscle strength. Plus, it helps you relax and relieve stress. Are you sure you don’t want to give it a try?
M: Sorry, but I want to do something more active outdoors.

M: Tiffany, can I borrow your laptop for about 10 minutes? I left mine at home.
W: I’m sorry, but not right now. I’m in the middle of doing something. Give me a few minutes.
M:  All right. I’ll be waiting over there reading a book.
W:  Okay. I’ll let you know when I’m finished.

M: Good morning, students. This is Principal Bernard. I’m pleased to announce that, beginning next month, we’ll begin using a new visitor management  system in our school to improve the safety of students and staff. The new system will enhance the way we screen visitors to our school and thus provide everybody with a safer environment. Upon entering the school, visitors will be asked to present a valid ID and we will check to make sure they don’t  have a criminal record using a national database. Once their entry is approved, we’ll issue them a visitor’s badge with the date and the purpose of visit on it. Please visit the school website for more information. By introducing this new system, I’m sure our school will be a safer place for you. Thank you.

M:  Hey, Susan. Are you taking this class, too?
W:  Yes, Sean. Let’s sit together.
M:  Here in the front row?
W:  Yes. You can easily hear the teacher.
M: But isn’t it uncomfortable right in front of the teacher?
W: I don’t think so. It’s easier to focus more on the class because you’re not getting distracted by other students.
M:  You have a point there. But I usually sit in the back.
W: I get too relaxed if I sit in the back. And I often end up losing focus on the teacher.
M: That’s true. That happens to me, too. Do you really think I’ll be able to concentrate better if I sit in the front row?
W: Definitely! What else can you do when the  teacher is right in front of you?
M:  Okay. Let’s sit here.
W: Great!

[Script & Translation]
W: Come on in, Dad. Look. My roommate and I rearranged our room yesterday. What do you think?
M:   I think you did a good job.
W:   It’s a better use of the space, isn’t it?
M:   Yeah. You moved the sofa to under the window.
W:   Right. It’s definitely better than before.
M: For sure. The room even feels bigger. Oh, you got curtains on the window.
W:   Yes.  Remember we had dark wood blinds   before?
Now the room is brighter and cozier.
M: Definitely. And the picture of the flowers above the coatrack is new, right?
W: Yeah. And the round clock, above the bookshelf, is new, too. The square one we used to have stopped working.
M: I like how it matches the round table and the rug on the floor.
W:   Overall, I’m really happy with the changes.

W:  Ethan, I have some bad news.
M:  What is it, Nelly?
W: I’ve just talked to the manager at the city homeless shelter on the phone about the volunteer activity we planned for the students. She said we have to reschedule our visit.
M: Really? Why? We scheduled this a few weeks ago and it’s just next week. We’ve  already hired a bus for it.
W: I know. But she said the shelter is having major electrical problems, and it’ll be closed for a while for repair.
M:  Oh, that’s too bad.
W: I think we need to tell the students and their parents about this.
M: Well, shouldn’t we first schedule a new date to go to volunteer before we tell them?
W:  Ah, you’re right.
M:  Do you know when the problems will be fixed?
W:  No, but I’ll find out now.
M:  That’d be great. Thanks.

[Script & Translation]
W:  Alan, how was your field trip to the zoo?
M: So much fun! Seeing the animals up close was amazing.
W: Yeah. When I was there last month, I really had fun feeding the animals.
M:  Me, too. But the wild animal safari was my favorite.
W: Oh, is that open now? I heard the safari would be closing for renovation.
M:  It’s open. The renovation starts next month.
W: Good. Did you see the famous giant pandas? When I went there, I had to wait a long time to see them.
M:  Unfortunately, I couldn’t.
W:  Why? Were they sick or something?
M:  No. They just had a baby, so the exhibit was closed.
W: That’s too bad. But at least you’ll be able to see the cute baby panda next time you visit.
M:  Sure. I can’t wait to see it.

M: Welcome to Papyrus Stationery Store. What can I help you with?
W:  Hi, where are the colored  pencils? M: Right over here. We sell them in sets. W:  That’s exactly what I want.
M: Okay. Here they are. How about this set? It has 18 colors. It’s on sale for $5 per set.
W: Great. I’ll take four sets. And I also need two sketchbooks.
M:  Those are right behind you.
W: All right. This one looks pretty good. Let’s see.... It’s $20. Umm.... The paper in the sketchbook is a little thicker than I want.
M: Oh, then here. This one has thinner paper. It’s normally $16, but it’s 50% off right now, so it’s only $8.
W:   Perfect. I’ll buy two of them.
M: Okay. Do you need anything else besides the four sets of colored pencils and two sketchbooks?
W:  Nope. And here’s my credit card.

M:  Hello. This is Finch Martin.
W: Hi, Professor Martin. This is Clara Morgan of the Arlington County Office of Education. I’m calling to ask you a favor.
M:  Okay. What is it?
W: We’re holding a speech competition in celebration of Science Day, and the topic is “Science and Human Rights.” I’d like to invite you to serve as a judge.
M:  I’d be honored. When is the competition?
W:  It’ll be on Tuesday, November 10 from 9 to noon.
M:  All right. I’m available on that day.
W: Great. It’ll be held at the State Science Center on Park Street.
M:  Okay. Who is the competition for?
W:  It’s for high school students. About 30 students  will participate in it.
M: I see. Could you email me more details about the competition?
W:  Sure. Thank you for accepting the invitation.

M: Honey, I’m trying to order a hammock for Noah’s school family camping trip online. Can you help me?
W: Sure. We should get one that you, me, and Noah could all lie in together.
M:  Good idea. Here are the ones on sale.
W: Okay, let’s see. I don’t think this one could hold all of us.
M: Right. We need one that holds at least 200 kilograms.
W: That’s right. And the mosquitoes are pretty bad nowadays, so let’s get one of these with a mosquito net.
M: Definitely. That’d be much better.
W: As far as the material is concerned, is there much  of a difference?
M: Well, I think it’d be better to get one of these polyester ones. It’d be easier to clean.
W: Okay. Then that leaves these two. Why not just get the cheaper one?
M:  All right. Then I’ll place an order for this one.

M: Yes, Mom. I’m a little stressed out about the inter- class choir competition next week.
W:  Why? What’s wrong?
M: I’m my class’s chorus leader, and a couple of students aren’t willing to participate in the practices.
W:  That’s not good. Have you asked them why?
M: Yes, I have. They don’t think they’re good at singing. But I think they just lack confidence.
W:  It sounds like they need to boost their confidence.
M: Yeah, because they’re not as bad at singing as they think. And I’m sure they’ll improve with more practice.
W: Maybe they feel uncomfortable practicing with everybody because they think they’re not good enough.
M:  Right. That’s the heart of the problem.
W: Why not ask them to practice with just you after school?

W: Hi, Colton. I need to do some more research for a group presentation. It’s about prehistoric clothing.
M:  That’s an interesting topic.
W: Yeah, but it’s so hard to find materials about it. I don’t know what to do.
M:  You’ve tried the Internet, right?
W: Of course. But I only found general information. I need to find more specifics.
M: Oh, I see. Hmm.... Then how about going to the Textiles and Clothing Museum?
W:  What’s that? I’ve never heard of it.
M:  It  recently opened near Riverside Station. I   went there last week. They have tons of information about the history of clothing.

W:  He  looks cute. That’s your first dog, right? Is    he doing okay with you?
M:  Actually, he is getting fat. I don’t know why.
W:  Do you walk him often?
M: Yeah. I walk him in the neighborhood park every day.
W:  Then, think about the food he’s eating.
M: I’m trying to give him the recommended amount of food.
W:  Then I think your child is causing your dog to be fat.
M:  What do you mean?
W: Kids tend to give their dogs what they’re eating without thinking. The problem is that the dogs eat all the food, which makes them get fat.
M:  You might be right. I’ll see if my son is doing that.

M:  Hmm, I’m surprised there aren’t a lot of  customers.
Usually it’s really crowded at this time, right?
W:  Yeah. For some reason or other, we’ve seen a  drop in customers in the past month.
M:  I see.
W:  Maybe people don’t like our sandwiches anymore.
M: No way! Your sandwiches are the best in town. I think it’s because of the new sandwich store across the street.
W: Really? But I’ve heard a lot of my customers say their sandwiches aren’t so great.
M: Maybe so. But this whole month they’ve been having a buy-one-get-one-free sale.
W: I didn’t know that. Some people must be choosing price over taste.

W: Joan and Tom are close friends who attend the same high school. They both want to be vocalists in the school band, so they sign up for the audition. The day after the audition, they find out the results: Joan passed the audition, but Tom didn’t. Joan feels bad to see Tom disappointed. A month later, Joan is told that the school band needs another vocalist, so they’ll have another audition. She tells the news to Tom, but he’s not sure if he should try out a   second time because he’s afraid of failing again. Joan thinks that if he goes for it again, he’ll succeed, and she wants to tell him that. In this situation, what would Joan most likely say to Tom?

M: Ethan is reading a magazine and comes across the term “bedtime procrastination.” According to the article, the term is defined as “failing to go to bed at the intended time, while no external circumstances prevent a person from doing so.” It says that people who procrastinate at bedtime put off sleep, but not because they want to stay up late. It’s because   they get so focused on doing something at night and don’t want to stop doing it. After reading the article, Ethan thinks of his sister Emily, who’s always complaining that she has sleeplessness and can’t sleep. But now Ethan thinks she procrastinates at bedtime rather than having sleeplessness. The next morning, Emily says that she couldn’t sleep the night before because of sleeplessness. Ethan wants to tell her what he thinks. In this situation what would Ethan most likely say to Emily?
Ethan: You can’t sleep because you put off sleep, not because of sleeplessness.

W: Welcome back, everyone. Now you know what a vegetarian is, but do you know what a vegan is? A vegan is a person who not  only doesn’t eat meat, but also any animal by-products such as eggs. To many people, it may seem almost impossible to   be a vegan because of such restricted food options. So what can vegans eat to maintain a well-balanced diet? First of all, they need to eat protein-rich plant alternatives, such as beans. This includes tofu, which is made from soybeans. Tofu is a good meat substitute because it’s high in protein, iron, and calcium. Another vegan food is plant-based yogurt. Since vegans can’t consume milk or milk-based products, they need a way to get their calcium. Therefore, vegans can eat plant-based yogurt that has added calcium. Finally, vegans eat a lot of seeds, such as hemp seeds, which contain larger  amounts of protein than most other seeds. If you’re interested in becoming a vegan, it’s not as difficult as you may think. Just remember what I mentioned. Thank you.

M: Hello, listeners. This is Scott Fisher from Happy Life. Camping is a great way to enjoy nature with others or even alone. Usually, a good or bad camping experience comes down to just one factor: whether you packed properly. So today, I’ll tell you about some essential camping gear.  First, don’t  forget a tent. It protects you from rain, wind, and bugs. The size of the tent depends upon your group size. And pack a lantern. If you  need to  locate an item or go to the bathroom during the night, a portable, battery-powered lantern is essential. And you  need a warm, comfortable sleeping bag. It’s  important to keep warm, as it can get cold at night, even in the summer. And bringing a camping stove is a convenient way to cook meals, especially if there’s no grill at your campsite. Don’t forget to pack these items to make your next camping trip a success!

M: How did people send mail before they had access to cars and trains? There were simple options out there, like delivery by animal. Horses were frequently utilized in delivery of letters and messages. In the 19th century, a mail express system that used horses serviced a large area of the United States. Pigeons may be seen as a problem by many people today. However, in ancient Greece, they were used to mail people the results of the Olympics between cities. Alaska and Canada are known for their cold winters. In their early days, dogs were utilized to deliver mail because they’ve adapted to run over ice and snow. Maybe the most fascinating of all delivery animals is the camel. Australia imported camels from the Middle East and utilized them to transfer mail across vast deserts. They were ideally suited to this job because they can go without water for quite a while. Fortunately, we’ve developed faster and more reliable delivery systems, but we should not ignore the important roles these animals played in the past.

W: Hello, everyone. There’s probably no greater force than a mother’s basic instinct to raise and protect her children. This is true for animals as well as humans. Here are some examples. The first are  elephants. In elephant herds, mothers take turns watching over each other’s children. This helps ensure the newborns’ survival by working together to protect the babies. Orangutans are another example. Orangutan mothers maintain physical contact with their babies for the entire first four months of their life. They never let their babies go. A third example is the octopus. After laying eggs, female octopuses dedicate the next two months to ensuring the eggs get enough oxygen by  pushing water   currents

towards the eggs. The female octopuses are so dedicated that they don’t have time to eat, so they often end up dying shortly after the eggs hatch. Lastly, after alligator eggs hatch, the female spends the next year of her life protecting her babies from other alligators. Incredibly, she does this by keeping her babies in her mouth to protect them. Now, we’ll watch a video about these animals.

M: Good morning, students! In the last class, we talked about inventions that have greatly changed human life. Today, we’re going to talk about how some of them were born. It’s interesting that many great inventions were created by observing nature. Let’s have a look. Helicopters are a good  example of this. Can you guess what the first inventors of helicopters were inspired by? They were inspired by dragonflies. Submarines are another invention that came from nature. While studying whales, scientists got the idea to invent an underwater ship from the way whales swim in the water. Also, fishing nets were made by imitating spider webs. The inventors were inspired by spiders capturing prey in their webs. The last one is the parachute. The creators of parachutes were inspired by observing dandelion seeds slowly falling to the ground in the wind. Now let’s study more examples by watching a video!

W: Welcome back to Science for Business! Now let’s continue to talk about colors. Marketers and graphic designers have long known that color plays a major role in the success of any marketing campaign. Specific colors tend to stir certain emotions in customers, thus motivating purchases. First of all, red is the color of power. It gets people’s attention, which is why it’s the most popular color for marketing. When you want to be viewed as trustworthy and cool, blue is the color for you. Blue can boost sales indirectly, by dealing with anxiety before it arises. Unlike red, which encourages purchasing, blue calms anxiety. That makes  blue a good choice for backgrounds on websites that deal with stressful things like finances, medicine or insurance. Most financial and insurance sites will use blue. Green is a color with many uses. It is warm, lending customers a pleasing feeling. It also represents health, environment  and  goodwill.

Moreover, green is the color of money, so it creates thoughts of wealth. Black is another color with multiple uses. It can be modern or traditional, exciting or relaxing. Used as a contrasting color, black most often adds emotion to whatever mood you want to create. Well, we’ve reached the end of today’s episode. Be sure to tune in again tomorrow.

M: Good evening, listeners. Welcome to Health Report. Eating more fruit improves overall health and reduces the risk of disease. A recent study ranked fruits by their nutrient density and calorie counts. Here are some fruits high on the list and their health benefits. Lemons came out on top. They’re  rich in vitamin C, which may reduce the risk of heart disease and lower blood pressure. Strawberries were second on the list. They contain anthocyanin and potassium, which can improve heart health. They also contain a natural compound which helps fight infection and inflammation. Third on the list were oranges. One medium-sized orange    provides a person with more than the daily requirement of vitamin C. Oranges are also a good source of pectin, a fiber, which can keep the colon healthy and help prevent cancer. Grapefruits also ranked high on the list. They contain flavonoids that can help protect against some cancers, inflammation, and obesity. Fruits come in all shapes and sizes, and they have different health benefits. So try to eat more!

M: Laura is a high school student. She goes to the city library and checks out a book she’s wanted to read for a long time. She starts reading it, but she ends up getting extremely busy studying for her midterms. Eventually, she realizes she won’t be able to finish reading the book before it’s due back at the library. She knows she can keep the book for a longer period upon request if nobody has reserved it, so she brings the book to the library. She wants to ask the librarian if she can extend the checkout period. In this situation, what would Laura most likely say to the librarian?

M: Linda and  Karen are  sisters, and  they’re  going on a trip abroad. They’re going to visit their uncle in Sweden and also travel around the country. They decide to take just one suitcase each. Karen has never traveled abroad before and starts stuffing her suitcase with anything she thinks she may need. Linda, on the other hand, has traveled overseas quite a few times and knows what to pack and what not to. When she sees what Karen is packing, she thinks Karen is packing too many things for the trip. Linda wants to tell Karen to pack as light as possible. In this situation, what would Linda most likely say to Karen?
Linda: Try to keep what you’re packing to a  minimum.

[Script & Translation]
W: Nelly and Matthew are classmates, and today they’re volunteering at a Children’s Day festival. Nelly’s job is taking children’s photos at the photo booth and Matthew is doing face-painting at the face- painting booth. The booths are not close to each other. At some point, there are too many kids at the face-painting booth for Matthew and the other volunteers to handle. So Matthew calls Nelly to ask for help. However, she’s also really busy at her booth. Therefore, Nelly wants to decline Matthew’s request. In this situation, what would Nelly most likely say to Matthew?
Nelly: I’m afraid I’m too busy to help  you.

5 정답 ⑤

M: Jacob is a high school freshman who enjoys science, so he decides to join the school science experiment club. One day, he tells his friend Mia about his plan. Mia tells Jacob the bad things she’s heard about the science experiment club. She says that the few members who are in the club aren’t that passionate about science. Also, she says that they don’t do many science experiments. Jacob has heard those same things, but he knows that there are new members and believes that the club is going to improve. He wants to tell Mia this. In this situation what would Jacob most likely say to Mia?
Jacob: The club will get better now that there are new members.

W: Sophia is a new middle school teacher. She’s concerned about one of her students who is so shy that he rarely interacts with others. For advice, she goes to talk to Kevin, a colleague with over 20 years of teaching experience. He’s great at giving new teachers teaching tips. After listening to Sophia’s concern, Kevin says that a great way to get a shy student to interact with his classmates is to give him tasks that require him to interact with other students. Sophia considers making the student the class librarian. She wants to know what Kevin thinks of her idea. In this situation, what would Sophia most likely say to Kevin?
Sophia: Would it be good to have my student manage the class library?

[Script & Translation]
M:  Amy, what are you reading?
W:  Dad, it’s a book for my philosophy course.
M:  Let me take a look. Wow! It’s a book by Kant.
W:  Yeah. It’s very difficult to understand.
M: You’re right. His books take a lot of effort to read since they include his deep knowledge and thoughts.
W: I think so, too. Do you have any ideas for me to understand the book better, Dad?
M: Well, why don’t you join a philosophy discussion group? You can find one in our area.
W: Are there discussion groups for philosophy? That sounds interesting.
M: Yeah. You can share ideas with others in the group about the book you’re reading.
W: You mean I can understand Kant’s book more clearly by discussing it?
M: Absolutely. Plus, you can develop critical thinking skills in the group as well.
W: Terrific! I’ll check right away if there are any nearby.

1 정답 ②
[Script & Translation]
M:  Linda, it’s almost lunch time. I’m starving!
W: Me, too. But I checked today’s cafeteria menu, and it’s terrible. It’s vegetable curry and rice.
M:  You don’t like curry?
W: I like curry, but not with carrots. And I know they put a lot of carrots in the curry. I’ll have to pick them all out.
M: Well... I’m not sure if you should do that today because today is Clean Plate Day.
W:  Clean Plate Day? What’s that?
M: It’s a new campaign the student council started to raise awareness about food waste. You’re supposed to finish everything on your plate today.
W:  Oh, no. I wish today’s meal was something different.
M:  Bad timing. But it’s a cool campaign.
W:  Yeah, I agree. We tend to waste a lot of food.
M:  For sure. So just do your best not to waste anything.
W:  You’re right. I’ll try to eat all of the carrots.

2 정답 ②
[Script & Translation]
W:  Honey, it feels good to be back home.
M: Right? Although our vacation was amazing, there’s no place like home.
W:  Hey, do you smell something strange?
M:  Hmm.... Yeah, I do. It smells like some kind of gas.
W:  Oh, no. I wonder where it’s coming from.
M: I’m not sure. But let’s open the windows to air out the house.
W: Okay. I’ll open the windows here and you go upstairs.
M:  All right. Don’t touch the gas range.
W: Sure. [Pause] Wait, honey. I found out where the smell’s coming from! It’s the garbage in the kitchen. We forgot to take it out before we left!
M:  Oh, my! There must be some rotten food in there.
W: Yeah. It’s been sitting here for two weeks! Please do something about it quick.
M:  All right. I’ll take it outside right away.

3 정답 ①
[Script & Translation]
W: Good afternoon, Mr. Smith. Can I talk to you for a minute?
M: Come on in, Lauren. Have a seat. How is the basketball team doing?
W: We’re doing really well. Thanks for asking. We actually made it to the semi-finals.
M:  Congratulations! When is your next game?
W: It’s next Thursday. And it’s an away game. I wanted to talk to you because there’s an exam in your class that day.
M: I see. So you won’t be able to take the exam that day?
W:  No, I won’t be able to.
M:  Hmm. There are two options then.
W: Okay.
M: You can either give a presentation or take an alternative exam the next day. The alternative exam would have the same format, but different questions.
W: I see. The alternative exam would be next Friday then, right? I’m afraid I can’t take it then.
M: Well, if you can’t take it then, there’s the other option.
W:  Okay. I’ll have to do the presentation.

4 정답 ④
[Script & Translation]
M:  Honey, what are you watching on TV?
W:  I’m about to start a movie. Do you want to join me?
M: Sure. [Pause] Oh, is that the can of almonds I bought the other day? It’s empty.
W:  Yes. I ate them all.
M:  I can’t believe you already finished them.
W: But it’s better than eating a whole bag of popcorn, isn’t it?
M: Probably. But that doesn’t mean eating that many almonds is good for you.
W: Almonds are healthy, though. They reduce your cholesterol.
M: That’s true, but they’re also really high in  calories, so if you eat a lot of them, you’ll gain a lot of weight.
W: I see. Since they’re healthy, I just thought the more the better.
M: No. How much you eat is as important as what you eat.

5 정답 ②
[Script & Translation]
W: Brian, it looks like you have a rash on your face. Are you feeling okay?
M: I’m feeling a little strange, honey. I’ve had a runny nose and rash on my face since I got back from my walk in the park this morning.
W:  Do you think you’ve caught a cold or something?
M: No. I don’t think so. I don’t have a fever or a sore throat.
W:  Well, did you touch any trees or flowers in the park?
M: No. I just stopped and sat on a bench under a big tree for a few minutes.
W: Hmm.... Pollen is everywhere these days, so you may have some allergies.
M: Ah, you’re probably right. What do you think I should do?
W: Well, you should change your clothes and wash your hands and face.
M: Okay, I will. Then what should I do if I still have an allergy even after following your advice?
W: If your symptoms continue, you should go see a doctor.

6 정답 ⑤
[Script & Translation]
W:  Jake, what are you doing on your phone?
M: I’m going to start taking surfing lessons next week, so I’m looking to buy a surfboard.
W:  That must be pretty expensive.
M:  Yeah, it’s more expensive than I expected.
W:  How about just renting a board?
M: I’d rather not wait to do that because I heard they sometimes all get rented out.
W: I don’t mean renting one each time you have a lesson. I mean renting one for a longer period of time.
M:  Are there any places that rent boards like that?
W: Sure. But not at a surf shop. I mean on sharing economy websites, where regular people rent things. It’s pretty cheap, too. I rented a dress for a party last month.
M: You did? Do you think people actually rent surfboards?
W: Probably. I’ve seen people sharing so many things online.
M: Hopefully they’ll rent surfboards on one of those sites.

7 정답 ④
[Script & Translation]
M:  Honey, I’m thinking about trying to lose weight.
W: I support you, Mike. You’ve gained weight in the last couple of years.
M: I’m overweight, but I didn’t realize how bad it is for my health.
W:  What made you realize that?
M: I went for a medical check-up today and my blood pressure is quite high. The doctor told me to watch my diet and lose weight.
W:  What did the doctor recommend?
M:  She told me I should start exercising regularly.
W: That’s a good idea. You know, there’s the new fitness club that just opened up on 4th Street.
M:  Yeah, I’m thinking about joining there. I just need to decide whether to get a personal trainer or not.
W: Well, I think you should get one at first so you can get a good workout routine to do.
M: I agree. I’ll sign up to get a personal trainer when I join.

8 정답 ①

[Cell phone rings.]
W:  Honey, can you do me a favor?
M:  Sure. What is it?
W: Can you get me some eggs, milk, and onions from the grocery store on the way home? I need them for camping this weekend.
M:  Sure, no problem. What are you cooking with them?
W:  Ham and cheese omelets.
M: Sounds good. Are you sure we need milk? Didn’t you get some yesterday?
W: Yeah. Jack accidentally dropped the carton this morning. The milk spilled all over the floor, so there’s none left.
M:  I got it. Should I just get one carton?
W: Umm. Actually buy two. We usually go through it pretty fast.
M: Okay. I’ll get two. Sorry, and what else did you want me to get?
W: A tray of eggs and 3 onions. Oh, and actually I have a few other things written down to get.
M: All right. I’m not sure I’ll be able to remember everything, though.
W:  I’ll text you a list of what to buy.

9 정답 ①
[Script & Translation]
M:  Hi, Pam. Come on in.
W: Hello, Mr. Turner. I heard from Bob that you wanted to see me.
M:  Yes.  I have something I’d  like to discuss with  you.
Please have a seat.
W:  Thank you. What’s it about?
M: It’s about your invention idea you submitted for the science assignment.
W: You mean my idea for a smartphone app that helps make recycling easy?
M:  Yes. The other science teachers and I really like it.
W:  Oh, I’m so glad to hear that.
M: So I’d like to recommend you submit your invention idea to the national invention contest.
W: The national invention contest? Well, I’m not so sure that mine is that good.
M:  Just give it a try. Your idea is really creative.

10 정답 ⑤
[Script & Translation]
W: Dad, something’s wrong with the printer. All the pages have white lines going down them.
M:  Maybe it’s almost out of toner.
W: Well, we’ve barely used the printer since replacing the toner last month.
M:  Does the printer show an error message?
W:  No, it doesn’t.
M:  I see. Then I’ll get it repaired tomorrow.
W: Okay, Dad. But the problem is I need to print out my report for class tomorrow morning.
M: Hmm.... Then how about asking your friend  Carol for help?
W: But don’t you think it’s too late to go to her house and use her printer?
M:  I mean you could send her your report by email.
W: Good idea! I’ll ask her to print it and bring it to school tomorrow.

11 정답 ④
[Script & Translation]
M: Honey, did you know our kitchen sink faucet is leaking?
W:  No, I didn’t. When did that start?
M:  I don’t know. I just noticed it.
W:  I wonder where the leak is coming from.
M: Let me see. [Pause] Oh, there’s a small crack around the faucet handle.
W: So that means we have to replace the whole faucet, right?
M: I think so. And it’s probably expensive to have a plumber do it.
W:  Yeah. Do you think we can do it ourselves?
M:  Well, I’ve never done it before, so I’m not sure.
W: I think all we have to do is buy the same faucet and replace it. I’m sure we have all the tools to do it.
M: You’re probably right. Then let’s try replacing the faucet ourselves. What shall we do first?
W: Well, I think we’ll need to turn off the water supply in our house first.
M: You’re right. I’ll close all the water valves right away.

12 정답 ⑤
[Script & Translation]
W:  Eric, how are your Chinese lessons going?
M:  Actually, I’m losing interest in them.
W: Really? You were really looking forward to studying Chinese when you started.
M: I know, I was. At first, I just took basic speaking lessons, and those were really fun. And the grammar wasn’t too difficult for me.
W:  So you’re saying it’s gotten harder?
M: Yeah, a lot harder. Because nowadays I’m studying how to read and write.
W:  Why is that so much more difficult than speaking?
M: Because there’s no alphabet. You just need to memorize Chinese characters, but there are so many and a lot of them look so similar. They’re really confusing.
W: That’s what my brother told me. But he said he knew one of the most effective ways of memorizing them.
M:  Really? Can you share his secret?
W: It’s effective to repeat writing the frequently used ones every day.
여: Eric, 중국어 수업은 어떻게 되어 가고 있니?

W: Once a year. It’s about time for a replacement. We haven’t had it replaced since April last year.
M:  I see. Should we contact the service center then?
W:  Yes. I’ll call them to come replace the filter.

W: Brian, it’s time to get up. You have baseball practice at 8 o’clock this morning.
M: Mom, I got a text last night that said practice was canceled. So I’m going to sleep a little more.
W: Oh, I see. Do you want me to return in a little while and wake you up?
M:  Yeah. Please come back in about an hour.

M:  Excuse me, ma’am. I think you’re in the wrong seat.
W: Really? Let me check my ticket. [Pause] My seat is Car 15 Seat 7C.
M: This is Car 5. You must’ve gone the wrong way when you got on the train.
W:  Sorry about that. I’ll go to my seat right away.

W: Hi, Daniel. Have you got your smartphone back from the repair shop?
M: Not yet. Do you think I can borrow yours for a second? I just need to search for something.
W: Sure. [Pause] Oh, no! Where’s my smartphone? I think I just had it in the library.
M:  Then you’d better rush back to get it.

M:  I love your hat! Where did you get it?
W: I bought it at Johnson’s Hat Shop in the shopping mall. They’re closing their store soon, so everything is half-price right now.
M: Really? I should go there. Do you know when their last day is?
W:  As far as I know, it will be next Saturday.

W: Jimmy, have you tried the new Chinese restaurant on 4th Street?
M: No. But my elder sister went there for her friend’s birthday party last week.
W:  What did she say about the restaurant?
M:  She didn’t like their food that much.

M: Well, I’m still working on my homework, but I think I’ll be finished in about 10 minutes.
W:  That’s great. Then I’ll wait until you’re ready.

W: Hello, Mr. Young. How are your students today? Mine are really tired, and they’re not paying attention in class.
M: Mine, too. They must be exhausted from the field trip yesterday.
W: Right. I wonder what we can do today to help them concentrate better. Any good ideas?
M: We could try using some games at the beginning of class.
