W: Hello, I’m Grace Cooper, the manager of the
    Dolphin Swimming Center. We always
appreciate your love and support for the
center. I have a wonderful announcement for
all our members. So far, swimming classes
have been held only in the mornings and
evenings. Since the number of members has
increased, many people have asked for new
afternoon classes. Finally, we decided to meet
your needs. From next month, there will be
two classes opening in the afternoons. The
instructor will be Mr. Jones. I hope this is
good news for our members. For more

M: Hi, Katie. What can I help you with?
W: Hello, Mr. Smith. I want to show you my
    essay to get your advice.
M: Let me see. [Pause] You have creative ideas
    in your writing!
W: Thanks, but I think I need to improve my writing
    skills.
M: Hmm, that requires a lot of effort. Do you
    read a lot?
W: No, I don’t have much time to read.
M: It’s the first thing you could do to improve
    your writing.
W: Why is that? How could reading help my
    writing?
M: Well, by reading books, you get a sense of
    how stories flow.
W: Oh, I’d never thought of that.
M: More importantly, you can learn a lot of words
    to use for your writing!
W: If that’s so, I’ll make time to read more
    books.
  5. [출제의도] 대화자의 관계 고르기
W: Hello, what can I do for you?
M: I went to the literature section, but I couldn’t
find Romeo and Juliet by Shakespeare.
W: Let me check.... [Typing sound] Oh, someone
    just borrowed it.
M: Oh, no. I really need it for my school
assignment. When can I borrow the book,
    then?
W: I’m not sure, but it is supposed to be returned
    in a week.
M: Then, are there any other books by
Shakespeare? My teacher wants me to write a
book review on a work by Shakespeare.
W: Okay. [Typing sound] We have several books
    by Shakespeare. How about Hamlet?
M: Oh, I’ve heard about that story. I’ll read that
    book instead, then.
W: Hamlet is in literature section H. I can show
you where it is if you want.
M: No, that’s okay. I can go get it. Thank you so
    much.
    W: You’re welcome.

W: Andrew, have a look at this picture.
M: Wow, it is a really nice room. Whose is this?
W: Mine. My family moved into a new house last
week, and I decorated the room by myself.
M: You did a great job! I especially like the
curtains with the striped pattern on the window.
W: Thank you. I thought these curtains would
    make my room stylish.
M: Good choice. The teddy bear on the bed is so
    cute.
W: These days I fall asleep hugging her.
M: How sweet! What is this lamp for?
W: I put the lamp beside the bed to read before
    going to sleep.
M: That’s a good idea. It also gives the room a
    nice atmosphere.
W: The flower pot on the bookshelf looks
    beautiful, doesn’t it?
M: It really does. And the round clock on the wall
    goes well with the room.
W: I’m happy to hear that you like my room.

W: Tom, did you pack everything for tomorrow’s

W: Good! Don’t forget to pack some extra
    clothes!
M: Sure, I did. Just in case!
W: Well done! What about hiking boots? Didn’t
you say you were going to borrow Jake’s?
M: Yes, he told me to pick them up in the
    afternoon.
W: That’s so sweet of him. Anything else?
M: There is just one more important thing left. I
have to go to the grocery store to buy some
    snacks!
W: Snacks are important. I’m going to the grocery
store right now. I could buy them for you if
    you want.
M: Could you? That would be great!
    W: Sure, sweetie. No problem.
M: Then all I have to do is get the boots from
    Jake!

M: I’m thinking of leaving my job.
W: Why? Did you get a job offer from another

M: Not yet, but I’ve submitted applications to
    some other companies.
W: I thought you were satisfied with your work
    and salary.
M: Well, the pay is good and I’m comfortable with
    this job.
W: Then, why do you want to leave?
    M: If I don’t look for a new challenge, I will get
used to doing the same easy job and I won’t
    develop.
W: You mean you want to develop your abilities
by challenging yourself with different work,
    don’t you?
M: Exactly. I would be happier with a job that
can help me improve my career.
W: I understand, but you’d better make the
decision after considering the matter carefully.
M: Thank you for your advice.

but maybe it’s too small for us.
W: You’re right. We drink a lot of tea. It should
    be at least 1.5 liters.
M: Hmm, this one is too expensive. I don’t want
to spend more than $30 on a kettle.
W: Me, either. Then we have three options. Which
I don’t think black looks good in our kitchen.
W: I agree. It makes the kitchen too dark.
M: What about the material? There is a plastic
    one and a glass one.
W: We have used a plastic one before. It’s better

M: Hi, Kelly! I’m making plans to run for
    president of student council.
W: Really? I’m guessing there will be strong
    competition among the candidates.
M: What do you mean by that?
W: I heard Angela is also going to run for the
position. She is popular among her classmates,
    you know.
    M: I didn’t know she was interested. I thought
    she was a shy girl.
W: Her friends are rather enthusiastic about
    making her student council president.
M: Good for her! I hope my friends help me, too.
W: I want to assist you in any way I can. Is
    there anything I can do?

M: Katie, how was school today?
W: Great, Dad. We had a special lecture about a
    new study strategy.
M: That must have been helpful for you! You
have been worried about your grades these
    days.
W: Yeah, I have. Now I’m going to make a new
study plan based on what I learned today.
M: What did you learn? Tell me about it.
W: The lecturer is the author of the book Just
Start Small. He said we should start small if
we want to get good grades.
M: Start small? That doesn’t make sense to me.
W: Let me give you an example. Memorizing just
one simple Spanish sentence after lunch is not
    difficult, is it?
M: Right, that doesn’t seem like much effort.
W: But if I do it for a month steadily, I will be

W: Sarah and Peter are supposed to act in Beauty
and the Beast on stage at the school festival.
While practicing together, Peter looks really
nervous. His voice is too small and he even
forgets what he should say from time to time.
Sarah is worried about Peter, so she asks him
to discuss his problem with her. Peter says
that he is afraid of acting in front of many
people. Then, Sarah remembers her experience
from last year. When she felt the same way,
she used to practice while her family or
friends watched, and she found it really
helpful. Now, Sarah wants to suggest that he
practice as she did. In this situation, what
would Sarah most likely say to Peter?
    [16~17] 긴 담화 듣기
M: Hello, students. Yesterday we looked at
movies where robots and ghosts talk and act
like human beings. Today we’re going to talk
about movies where animals play an important
role. The 1961 film, 101 Dalmatians, is a Walt
Disney classic. A dog, Pongo, played a lovable
role in this memorable film. But animal movies
aren’t just about dogs. The movie, Lion King,
tells the story of a young lion, Simba. He
becomes the king after overcoming many
difficulties. Jurassic Park is a 1993 American
science fiction film directed by Steven
Spielberg. You can feel big thrills while
watching many dangerous dinosaurs. In Babe, a
cute little pig made a strong impression on
lots of moviegoers. What’s the best animal
character movie? If you think your favorite
animal film is missing, go ahead and share it
    with us!

morning. She can’t walk because of the pain.
M: I’m sorry to hear that. That must be hard for
her.
W: It is. So I will have to take care of her this
weekend.
M: Then we can’t have our meeting this Saturday.
W: That’s right. I’m terribly sorry, but I have to
delay the meeting.
M: Don’t worry about that. So, when will you
have time?
W: I guess any day next week is good for me.
M: Okay, then shall we make it next Monday?
W:

M: Hi, Emily! How are your wedding preparations
going?
W: They’re going well so far. I reserved a
wedding hall and ordered invitation cards.
M: Good. Everything’s almost settled. It’s on the
first Saturday of July, right?
W: Yes. Can you come?
M: Of course. Is there anything that I can help
you with?
W: Actually, I haven’t decided who’ll sing at the
wedding. So, would you sing for me?
M: I’d love to, but I’ve never done anything like
that before.
W: I heard you singing at the college song
festival, so I know you’re a good singer.
M: Thanks, but I’m afraid I may not sing well
enough to do so at a wedding.
W: Oh, please! I’m sure it would be the best
wedding gift. I’d look forward to it.
M:
[어구] preparation 준비 look forward to ~을 기대

W: Alex and Olivia have been close friends since
they were children. They grew up in the same
town, and they attend the same high school.
One day, Alex tells Olivia that his father got a
new job so his family has to move to another
city. That’s why he’s going to transfer to a
new school next week. Olivia feels sad
because they have been friends for such a
long time. Alex also hopes to keep his
friendship with her. So, Alex wants to suggest
that they remain in close touch even after he
leaves the city. In this situation, what would
Alex most likely say to Olivia?
M: Hello, everyone. Last class we learned about
the dangers of climate change. Today, I’ll tell
you about some foods that might disappear
because of climate change. First of all, 70
percent of the world’s coffee could disappear
by 2080 due to climate change. In Africa, the
amount of coffee produced has dropped by
more than 50 percent. Secondly, avocados are
also in danger. It usually takes 72 gallons of
water to make just one pound of avocados.
Climate change in California has resulted in a
lack of water, so the avocado plants aren’t
producing enough fruit. Thirdly, warmer
temperatures affect apple trees, too. To grow
properly, apple trees need a certain period of
cold weather. Lack of cold weather time leads
to lower apple production. Finally, the unstable
climatic conditions through crop season are
causing a decrease in strawberry production in
Florida. Specifically, hotterthannormal
weather
has delayed the flowering and production of
strawberries. Now, let me show you some
slides about this issue.
[어구] temperature 온도 unsta

M: Hi, Ellen. I heard you participated in the audition for the musical.
W: Yeah, I did. But I’m not sure if I’ll get the role. I’m waiting for the results.
M: When will they give the results?
W:
- 2 -
W: Hi, Nick. Are you still using the laptop you borrowed from me?
M: Oh, Jenny. I was about to tell you that mine has been repaired.
W: That’s great. I need my laptop back for a workshop tomorrow.
M:
- 3 -
M: Good morning, Pyntech company employees. I’m Paul Larson from the
Department of Human Resources. As you know, the deadline to apply for the
Excellent Employee Award is next Friday. So far, only a few people have
applied for the award. I’d like to encourage all of you to submit your
application form for a chance to win. In addition to the $300 prize, it’s an
opportunity for your efforts to be recognized. Application for this award is
open to any employee who has shown outstanding performance and has
helped create a positive work environment this year. It doesn’t matter
whether you won previously or not. So if you think you’re qualified, please
don’t hesitate to apply for the Excellent Employee Award. Maybe you’ll be
the winner this year!

M: What are you doing, Ms. Roberts? Are you writing a letter by hand?
W: Yes, Mr. Williams. I’m writing thank-you notes to my clients.
M: Isn’t it easier to use a computer?
W: Probably, but I think people are moved when they get a hand-written letter,
instead of one that’s been typed on the computer.
M: It must take a long time. And you have so many clients.
W: Well, I think it’s worth it. A hand-written letter can give an impression of
being taken very special care of.
M: But I’m still not sure it’s worth the extra effort.
W: Imagine getting a hand-written letter from someone. You’d probably be
touched by their extra effort, wouldn’t you?
M: You’re right. I guess I would feel personally connected with the writer.
W: That’s what I mean. A hand-written letter really touches a person’s heart.
M: Now I get your point.

[Cell phone rings.]
W: Hello.
M: Hello, Ms. Peterson. This is David Smith.
W: Oh, hi, Mr. Smith. Thank you for coming to my photo exhibition yesterday.
M: My pleasure. It was great meeting you. So have you thought about what I
suggested?
W: Yes, I have. I’d be happy to take pictures for the cookbook you’re planning
to publish.
M: I’m glad to hear that. My cookbook will be a big hit with your photos.
W: Thanks for saying so.
M: Then why don’t we meet at my restaurant to talk about the project in detail?
W: Okay. My studio is closed on Wednesdays, so I’m free then. Is this
Wednesday convenient for you?
M: Great. How about 10 o’clock in the morning?
W: That’s fine with me.
M: After talking about the project, I’ll make you a few dishes using my best recipes.
W: Fantastic. See you then.
- 6 -
M: Honey, I found a restaurant for our wedding anniversary.
W: Great. Is that their website?
M: Yeah. Take a look at this photo.
W: Wow! There’s a piano on the stage.
M: Yes. They have live performances on weekends.
W: That’s wonderful. I like the star-shaped light hanging from the ceiling.
M: Yeah. It glows beautifully. What do you think of the two pictures on the wall?
W: They’re nice. They add to the atmosphere. Honey, which table should we sit at?
M: How about the round table between the rectangular ones?
W: I love it. It looks pretty, and it’s the perfect place to watch a performance.
M: Sure. Look! I like the striped curtains on the window.
W: Yeah, I like the striped pattern, too.
M: I’m glad you like the restaurant. I’ll make a reservation.

W: Mr. Johnson, how are the Children’s Book Week preparations going?
M: They’re going well. For the signing events, I’ve already contacted the authors.
W: That’s great. Did you finish the advertising preparations I asked for?
M: Yes. I made fliers for the events and printed them out.
W: Great. I also think sending text messages to our members will help.
M: No worries. I’ve done that, too.
W: Okay. Do you remember the discount event? If customers buy one book,
they get another for 50% off.
M: Yes, I do. You said you would decide which books would be part of the event.
W: Right. Here’s the list of the books. The next step is displaying them for the
discount event. Would you like to do that?
M: No problem. I’ll do it.
W: Thanks. Then I’ll order some gifts for the events.

M: Hi, Charlotte. How was the basketball game last night?
W: Well, unfortunately, I couldn’t go.
M: Oh, no! What happened? Were the tickets sold out?
W: No, I bought a ticket in advance.
M: I’m not surprised. I know they’re your favorite team.
W: Yeah. I even changed my work schedule to go to the game.
M: But you couldn’t go. Why not?
W: Well, I had to take care of my daughter unexpectedly.
M: Doesn’t your husband usually watch her on weekdays?
W: He does. But suddenly he had to go on a business trip yesterday, so I had to
take care of her.
M: That’s too bad. Well, there’s always next time.
- 9 -
W: Hello. Welcome to Uncle John’s Dairy Farm. How can I help you?
M: Hi. I’d like to buy admission tickets for the dairy farm.
W: Alright. It’s $10 per adult and $5 per child.
M: Okay. I’ll take one adult and two children’s tickets, please.
W: Sure thing. And we also have a hands-on experience program for children.
They get to make pizza with cheese from our farm.
M: Sounds fun. How much is it?
W: It’s originally $20 per child. But this week, you can get a 50% discount on
the program.
M: Wow! That’s lucky. I’ll buy two.
W: I’m sure your kids will love it.
M: I hope so. Ah, I have a coupon for 10% off. Can I use it?
W: Let me check. [Typing sound] Sorry, but this coupon expired last week.
M: Too bad I’m not able to use it. I’ll pay by credit card.
- 10 -
M: Hi, Jessica. What are you looking at?
W: Oh, hi, Michael. I’m looking at the posters for the student president election
to find out more about it.
M: Oh, yeah? When is the election going to be?
W: It’s next Wednesday, July 17.
M: Okay. And I’m curious about what the candidates’ promises are this year.
W: Well, the first candidate promises to make the school festival the best. And
the second candidate’s promise is to extend gym hours.
M: Hmm... To make up my mind, I’ll have to hear their speeches.
W: Me, too. They’ll each give their speech in the main auditorium this Friday.
M: Okay. This year the method of voting is electronic, isn’t it?
W: Yeah. If you log in on the voting page with your student number and
password, you can vote there.
M: Great. I’m excited to see who will be elected!

Sunstone City Library
W: Hello, Beautiful Moment listeners. I’m Sarah Cliff. I have great news. The
Sunstone City Library opens on August 5. I know many of you are excited
about this. The library was designed by famous architect Samuel Lewis,
who’s known for having designed the Kingsbury Museum. This library
offers a wide range of virtual reality experiences in its science section. The
virtual reality devices can be used for free. What this library is most proud of
is its book collection. It has the second largest collection of books in
Sunstone City. There’s another thing you should know. On the opening day,
the library will give visitors a gift. Why don’t you visit the library for a
wonderful experience? I’ll be back after a commercial break. Stay tuned!

M: Honey, I’m looking online for a picture frame for the painting we bought
recently. Shall we choose one together?
W: Sure. Let me see. How much should we spend?
M: I don’t want to spend more than $40. I think a picture frame over that price is
too expensive.
W: I see. Then let’s go for a model under $40. Next, which material do you want?
M: I don’t like plastic. What do you think?
W: Me, neither. It’s not eco-friendly.
M: Okay. Let’s choose from the non-plastic models. Now what about the color?
W: Well, not white. White wouldn’t match the painting well.
M: You’re right. Plus, white gets dirty too easily.
W: Then we have two options left. Oh, they both come with a free gift. Which
do you prefer, the picture key ring or the picture magnet?
M: Well, why don’t we take the picture magnet?
W: Alright. It would be a great decoration for our refrigerator.
M: Okay. Let’s order this model.
- 13 -
[Cell phone rings.]
W: Hello, Jake.
M: Hi, Betty. Sorry to call you this early.
W: That’s okay. Is anything wrong?
M: You know I’m directing the school play Snow White, right?
W: Of course. The play’s going to be this afternoon.
M: Right. But I have a serious problem. The student responsible for the sound
effects cannot come because he has a bad cold.
W: Oh, no.
M: So, I need someone who can control the sound effect system for the
performance this afternoon. I’m thinking you could do the job since you did
it for last year’s play.
W: Sorry, I can’t, Jake. I have an interview for a student exchange program this
afternoon.
M: Hmm... I don’t know what to do then.
W: Well, I can call a friend of mine, if you want. He knows how to use the system.
M: Really? That would be a great help.
W: Okay. Let me check if he’s available.
M:
- 14 -
W: Dad, you’re early. What are you doing in the kitchen?
M: Hi, Amy. I finished work early, so I’m going to cook something.
W: Great! What are you going to cook?
M: How about turkey sandwiches and mashed potatoes?
W: That sounds good. But can you make your shrimp pasta, instead?
M: I know that’s your favorite, but we don’t have any shrimp.
W: Oh, please, Dad. Your shrimp pasta is the best!
M: Okay. Well, there’s a seafood market near your mom’s company. Why don’t
you call and see if she can buy some shrimp?
W: That’s a good idea. I think it’s about time for her to leave the office.
M: Yeah. You’d better hurry up. I’ll start preparing vegetables for the pasta.
W:

Peter Peter
M: Peter recently gave his grandmother a smartphone for her birthday. She uses
it frequently and often asks Peter to help her do things such as sharing photos
or downloading apps. Peter is happy to help her, but he has to go abroad for a
long business trip next week. He’s worried that she’ll have no one to help her
with her smartphone. So he searches for a way to help her and finds that the
local senior center offers a class which teaches seniors how to use smartphones.
He thinks the class can help her use the smartphone by herself. So, Peter
wants to tell his grandmother to learn smartphone skills from the senior
center. In this situation, what would Peter most likely say to his grandmother?
- 16 -
W: Hello, students. Last class, we learned about the history of museums. You may
think they’re boring, but that’s not true. Today I’ll tell you about museums in
different countries that are not like any museums you’ve ever seen. Each has
unusual features which will surely grab your attention. First is a spy museum in
the USA. Here you can see a collection of spy tools including mini cameras,
fake money, and special devices from the spy movies. Then there’s an
interesting toilet museum in India. The museum displays toilets and related
items ranging from ancient to modern times. These have been collected from
50 countries. Next, Japan has an instant ramen museum. Here you can learn
ramen’s history and make your own fresh cup of ramen. Finally, one museum
has an unusual way of enjoying the exhibits. To explore the underwater museum
in Mexico, you have to snorkel, scuba dive, or ride a glass-bottom boat. Which
museum most interests you?
