W: Hi, Sam. How are you?
M: Fine. How about you, Christine?
W: I feel really good.
M: Wow! What happened to you? You usually say you’re tired.
W: Well, I changed how I sleep. I started sleeping on my left side, and it has improved my health.
M: Really?
W: Yeah. I’ve done it for a week, and my digestion has got better.
M: I didn’t know how we sleep has something to do with digestion.
W: It does. Sleeping on your left side helps the digestive process because your stomach is on the left.
M: I can see that. But does improving digestion make you that much healthier?
W: Sleeping on the left side does more than that. I think it’s good for health because it also helps blood circulation to the heart.
M: That makes sense. I guess I should try it.

W: What are you doing, Paul?
M: I’m making a study plan for the midterm exams, Mom.
W: That’s good.
M: My plan is to take a short break every hour and not stay up late at night.
W: Sounds smart.
M: And I’m going to study only one subject a day, not several. I don’t want to mix them.
W: Are you sure about that? It can be refreshing for your brain to change subjects. It could be more efficient to study multiple subjects a day.
M: Oh, really? I thought it’d be better to just focus on one subject a day.
W: I can show you a news article I read about focusing if you want. It says people easily lose focus when they try to do one thing for a long time.
M: I can see that.
W: I think dividing up your time and working on multiple subjects during the day would be more productive.
M: Okay. I’ll plan my studies with that in mind then.

W: Mr. Anderson, our club members are really looking forward to the Respect Life Campaign this Saturday.
M: That’s good. How many of your club members are participating?
W: Everyone. We’ve finished making our signs.
M: Great. But I don’t think it’s a good idea to campaign outside if there’s a lot of fine dust. I’m afraid it’ll be bad this Saturday.
W: Really? But it’ll be difficult to reschedule it.
M: I understand. But the forecast says the fine dust will be very bad this weekend. It won’t be good for your
health if you stay outside.
W: What if we all wear masks?
M: Masks don’t really help when you’re outside for hours and the fine dust is really bad. You’re going to run the campaign all day, aren’t you?
W: Yes, we are. Can we do it indoors?
M: I guess that could be an option. Would you like to do that?
W: I’ll talk to the other members and let you know.
여: Anderson 선생님, 우리 동아리 부원들은 이번 토요일에 있 을 ‘생명 존중 캠페인’을 정말 기대하고 있어요.

W: Hey, Jack, what’s that you’re writing?
M: Hey, Miranda. It’s a feedback report for one of my
coworkers. It’s a work requirement that we give feedback to each other.
W: Is it helpful?
M: Yeah. But it’s not easy to give negative feedback.
W: What’s so difficult about it?
M: Well, I know that I should be honest, but I don’t want to hurt my coworker’s feelings.
W: If that’s the case, you should try to use verbs instead of adjectives.
M: Can you be more specific?
W: If you use verbs rather than adjectives, it helps to make your feedback sound softer, and less like a personal attack.
M: Can you give me an example?
W: For example, you can say “Sometimes you interrupt others and forget to ask for different opinions” instead of “You are sometimes bossy and controlling in team meetings.”
M: I see what you mean. That’s a good idea. Thanks.

W: Ethan, you should come and have one of these apples my grandfather grew.
M: Wow, thanks! [Pause] It has a really unique taste.
W: Yeah. It’s a new variety grown from imported seeds.
M: Oh. Your grandfather must pay a lot for imported seeds.
W: He does. He told me, though, that a lot of fruits and vegetables sold in our country are from imported seeds.
M: I heard about that. My biology teacher said that. That means if other countries stopped giving us their seeds, we’d have a problem growing food.
W: Yeah. That’s why we need to develop more domestic varieties of seeds.
M: You’re right. If we keep relying too much on imported seeds, our domestic food industry may become less secure.
W: So researchers here at home are trying to develop domestic seed varieties. I hope they succeed in doing that.
M: For sure. That’s really important for our future food supply.
W: If we develop and take ownership of more of our seeds, we can create more food security and pay less to other countries for their seeds.

W: Look! Josh, I’ve never seen a store with so many pairs of jeans.
M: Me, neither. I have a trivia question for you. Do you know how much water it takes to make one pair of jeans?
W: I have no idea.
M: For just one pair, it requires up to 10,000 liters of water.
W: No way that’s true.
M: It is true. Maybe worse, the coloring used to dye denim jeans is toxic. And some of it gets into waterways.
W: That sounds terrible for the environment.
M: It is. That’s why we need to cut down on purchasing so many jeans.
W: But jeans are so popular.
M: I know, but every time we buy a pair of jeans, we’re harming the environment.
W: I always knew plastic bags were bad for the environment, but not jeans.
M: So it’s important to be an informed consumer.

W: Honey, what are all these medicine bottles here for?
M: I cleaned up the medicine cabinet. I thought you
might want to see them before getting rid of them.
W: All right, thanks. Let’s see. [Pause] Yeah, they’re all expired.
M: Okay. I’ll throw them out then.
W: You mean in the trash can?
M: Yeah. Why?
W: We should take them to a place that has a medication disposal drop-off. The people there will dispose of them properly.
M: Oh, that’s a good idea. Earlier I just flushed a bunch of old pills down the toilet. That’s probably not good.
W: It’s not. The chemicals in the medications can end up in lakes and other water sources.
M: That can’t be good.
W: So that’s why some places collect medications and safely dispose of them. That’s where we should take these.
M: Okay. I’ll find out if there’s such a place near here.
